Giuseppe Mazzotta, the Charles C. and Dorathea S. Dilley Professor of Italian Language and Literature, and chair of the Department of Italian, received the Ignazio Silone International Prize on Dec. 1. In its 10th year, the award is given to men and women of letters, novelists, essayists, poets and scholars, whose work tackles the moral issues of our time in the spirit of Ignazio Silone's novels and tracts.

Yale's annual summer sports camp, operated within the framework of the National Youth Sports Program (NYSP), was selected by the NYSP to receive the Silvio O. Conte Award of Excellence "in recognition of exceptional 2001 NYSP project peformance." Tim Ford, director for development and community outreach in the Athletics Department and Yale's NYSP project administrator, and Queen Edwards, activity director, were also acknowledged by evaluators for their outstanding leadership. The award will be presented to Yale representatives during a NYSP workshop scheduled for Jan. 17-20 in Washington, D.C.

Janet Z. Weiswasser, director of community affairs and development in the Department of Pediatrics at the School of Medicine, was one of nine executives to graduate from the Greater New Haven Leadership Center's Executive Orientation program. Administered by the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce, the orientation program is designed for executives from all organizations who are new to the area or new to their positions or both, and are interested in understanding the relevant issues of the region.

The Yale School of Management (Yale SOM) honored William J. McDonough, president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, with the Yale School of Management Award for Distinguished Leadership in Global Capital Markets. McDonough received the award on Nov. 27 in London, England, at a ceremony hosted by Yale SOM Dean Jeffrey E. Garten. The award program was started last year by Yale SOM to honor an individual who has had significant impact furthering the efficiency, safety and soundness of the international finance system. The inaugural honoree was Arthur Levitt, then chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Joseph A. Puma, a junior in Ezra Stiles College, was awarded a scholarship by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, one of the nation's leading Hispanic educational organizations. The awards are given to Latino students who have demonstrated strong leadership and a commitment to the Latino community.

A Ruthfest in honor of Ruth Barcan Marcus, the Reuben Post Halleck Professor Emeritus of Philosophy, was held at the University of California at Los Angeles Nov. 30-Dec. 2. For more information about the event, visit www.humnet.ucla.edu /humnet/phil/Ruth.html.

Tian Xu, an associate professor of genetics and assistant investigator with the Howard Hughes Institute, is the first recipient of a $100,000 Tuberous Sclerosis (TS) Alliance Rothberg Award for Courage in Research. Xu was recognized for his genetic studies that have advanced knowledge toward finding a cure for TS complex, a genetic disorder that leads to benign tumors in multiple organs. Up to four TS Alliance Rothberg Awards for Courage in Research will be presented each year for scientific excellence.
