Campus Notes

John Merriman, professor of history, will discuss Adam Nossiter's "The Algeria Hotel: France, Memory, and the Second World War" on Thursday, Feb. 28, as part of "Books Sandwiched In," a series of free noon-hour book discussions sponsored by the Friends of the New Haven Free Public Library. The discussion will take place 12:10-12:50 p.m. at the United Church on the Green, corner of Temple and Elm streets. Those who attend are invited to bring a lunch; coffee, tea and cookies will be available for purchase in the basement of the church 11:20 a.m.-12:10 p.m.

Eeva-Liisa Pelkonen, assistant professor (adjunct) at the School of Architecture, will speak on "Glass Dreams -- Contemporary Glass Architecture" as part of a symposium on greenhouses and their renovation on Saturday, March 2. Titled "Glass Houses -- Green Spaces," the symposium is sponsored by Edgerton Park Conservancy. Leonard Sophrin of the American Institute of Architects and Shelley Dillard of the Morris Arboretum in Philadelphia will also speak. Tickets for the symposium are $45 and will include a catered lunch and tour of the renovated Edgerton Park greenhouse range. Reservations are due by Friday, Feb. 22. The Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library's exhibition catalog, "Heinrich Schütz to Henry Miller: Selections from the Frederick R. Koch Collection at Yale University," was named a winner in the professional illustrated category of the 45th Annual New England Book Show. The competition was sponsored by the Bookbuilders of Boston and judged by a panel of 22 members of the New England book publishing community. The awards will be distributed at the 2002 Book Show on March 14 at the Copley Plaza Hotel in Boston. "Heinrich Schütz to Henry Miller," published in April 2001, was designed by Howard Gralla, a lecturer in the Yale College seminars.
