Foundation's gift aids studies of cancers affecting women
To help further innovative research efforts on cancers primarily or solely affecting women, The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven and its John A. and Edna M. DeLeon and Edith P. Rausch Funds have awarded a $75,000 grant to Women's Health Research at Yale.
"We are grateful for the partnership of The Community Foundation of Greater New Haven," says Carolyn M. Mazure, professor of psychiatry and director of Women's Health Research at Yale. "This support will directly advance our efforts in responding to the need for research-based information on breast and ovarian cancer."
Current investigations in cancer research that are supported by Women's Health Research at Yale include determining the genetic risk for breast cancer; analyzing exfoliated breast cells as a test for recurrence; enhancing screening in women at high risk for breast cancer; exploring new molecular strategies for fighting ovarian cancer; using gene therapy for preventing metastases in ovarian cancer; and developing tests for detecting therapeutic responses to ovarian cancer drugs.
Women's Health Research at Yale is committed to disseminating new scientific information that is useful to women and health care providers in the New Haven area, says Mazure. "The results of these and other studies will be communicated through an ongoing series of research workshops designed to inform and educate scientists, clinicians and women in New Haven and surrounding communities," she adds.
Since 1928 donors to the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven have built a permanent endowment currently valued at approximately $223 million. In 2000, the Foundation Board of Directors distributed $7.3 million from over 445 different named funds supporting grants in the areas of health, education, neighborhood building, regional and economic development, arts and culture and other vital areas.
