Hellenic studies program to
host conference on modern Greece

The Program in Hellenic Studies at the Yale Center for International and Area Studies (YCIAS) will hold its first conference, titled "Modern Greece and Its Monuments," on Friday and Saturday, April 5 and 6, at the Whitney Humanities Center, 53 Wall St.

The conference will concentrate on the construction of a national history of the state of modern Greece, from its independence in 1821 to the present. The speakers -- 15 internationally renowned scholars in the areas of Greek history, archaeology and art history -- will focus on cultural artifacts, monuments, new architectural projects and the restoration of archaeological sites.

According to Maria Georgopoulou, codirector of the Program in Hellenic Studies and director of the conference, "We will focus on the cultural relationship of modern Greece to Byzantium and the Ottoman Empire, as well as specific historical moments crucial for the formation of the cultural identity of contemporary Greece, such as Thessaloniki as cultural capital of Europe in 1997, or the return of the Olympic games to Greece in 2004."

The event is free and open to the public. The conference is cosponsored by the Stavros S. Niarchos Foundation, the Edward J. and Dorothy Clarke Kempf Fund at Yale, the Whitney Humanities Center and Yale's Department of the History of Art.

The Program in Hellenic Studies is a part of YCIAS, the University's principal agency for encouraging and coordinating teaching and research on international affairs, societies and cultures around the world. The program offers courses related to post-classical Greece and instruction in the modern Greek language. It also organizes interdisciplinary lecture series, symposia and conferences, and supports faculty and graduate student research. The program is made possible by an endowment from the Niarchos Foundation.
