Concert of 'Star Wars' music marks
conductor's Yale anniversary

A concert featuring music from the "Star ,Wars" films will highlight a weekend celebration marking the 20th anniversary of Thomas C. Duffy as director of Yale Bands.

The performance, the final performance of the Yale Concert Bands' 2001-2002 season, will also feature the premiere of a new work for bass and winds and a work by Duffy, as well as other offerings. It will take place at 8 p.m. on Friday, April 5, in Woolsey Hall, corner of College and Grove streets. Admission to the concert is free.

John Williams' classic movie score, the "Star Wars Trilogy," is being presented as a "teaser" for the upcoming release of the latest installment in the series, "Star Wars: Episode II: Attack of the Clones," slated for release in May. The score features the "Imperial March" (Darth Vader's theme), "Princess Leia's Theme," "The Battle in the Forest," "Yoda's Theme" and the "Star Wars" theme music.

The concert will also feature Duffy's "Song of Hiawatha," which he wrote in 1986 for the Statue of Liberty's centennial celebration. The impressionistic music is based on Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's epic poem of the same name.

Charles Young's "Concerto for Double Bass and Wind Ensemble" will also make its debut. The work, the only concerto for bass and winds, was commissioned by the Yale Concert Band and will feature bass soloist Kevin Mayner, a student of Donald Palma, professor of double bass at the School of Music.

The band will also perform Donald Grantham's "Southern Harmony," a work based on William "Singin' Billy" Walker's 1835 songbook, a popular work that sold 600,000 copies before the Civil War. The songbook contained "a choice collection of tunes, hymns, songs, odes and anthems, selected from the most eminent authors in the United States."

Leonard Bernstein's "Slava!" and John Barnes Chance's "Incantation and Dance" will round out the program.

Over 50 years of Yale Band alumni and friends are expected to attend the celebration in Duffy's honor.
