Sitar virtuosa to perform in Woolsey Hall

Sitarist Anoushka Shankar will perform in Woolsey Hall, corner of Grove and College streets, on Thursday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m.

The concert is part of Shankar's 2001-2002 tour through the United States, Asia and the United Kingdom. For tickets, call (800) 292-NHSO.

Shankar is the first and only sitarist in the world trained completely by her father, Indian sitar master Ravi Shankar. She began studying the sitar at the age of nine and made her performing debut at age 13. In 1998, she became the youngest as well as the sole female recipient of a House of Commons Shield from the British Parliament in recognition of her artistry and musicianship.

Shankar's recordings include "Anoushka," "Anourag" and most recently "Live at Carnegie Hall," in which she performs with her father.
