Conference on 'God and the Ethics of Belief'
pays tribute to retiring Yale philosopher
Nicholas Wolterstorff

Noted philosophers from the United States and England will explore the theme "God and the Ethics of Belief" in a conference April 18-20 marking the retirement of Nicholas Wolterstorff, the Noah Porter Professor of Philosophical Theology at the Divinity School and professor of philosophy.

The scholars will present papers on such topics as "Can God Break the Laws?," "The Probability of Resurrection," "Perceptual Experience and Mental Representation," "Free Will, Evil and Divine Providence," "Is God an Unnecessary Hypothesis?" and "Can Good Christians Be Liberals? On the Ambivalent Answer of Nicholas Wolterstorff," among others. All talks will take place in Rm. 102 of Linsly-Chittenden Hall, 63 High St.

Conference events begin on Thursday, April 18, with a welcome at 7 p.m. and conclude with a banquet at the Omni Hotel on Saturday, April 20, at 7 p.m. Wolterstorff will offer concluding remarks at the banquet. In conjunction with the conference, there will be an art exhibit at the Institute of Sacred Music at the Divinity School, 409 Prospect St.

Wolterstorff has been a prominent contributor to the analytical philosophy of religion. His work ranges across metaphysics, epistemology, political philosophy, the history of philosophy, theology, and perhaps most notably, aesthetics and the philosophy of religion. Before coming to Yale in 1989, he taught at the Free University of Amsterdam, the University of Notre Dame, and, for over 30 years, at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He has written some 15 books and published many articles in both professional and popular journals. He served as president of the American Philosophical Association's Central Division and of the Society of Christian Philosophers.

Registration for the conference is required. Further details about the event and registration materials can be found at www.yale.edu/wolterfest.
