Benefit art auction will feature works by Yale faculty artists

Current and former Yale faculty members have donated works of art for an auction 5-8 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, marking the grand opening of Artspace's new Center for Contemporary Art at the Chamberlain Building in Ninth Square.

Nearly 100 works of art by emerging and established artists will be auctioned off to support Artspace's exhibition, education and community-building programs. Artspace is the parent nonprofit that runs the untitled(space) gallery and organizes the annual City-Wide Open Studios.

Among the Yale affiliates who have donated works for a live auction are: William Bailey, the Kingman Brewster Professor Emeritus of Painting at the School of Art; Richard Benson, dean and professor of photography at the School of Art; Turner Brooks, associate professor (adjunct) of architecture; Andrew Forge, the William Leffingwell Professor of Painting at the School of Art; Donald Margulies, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and lecturer in English; Tod Papageorge, professor and director of graduate studies in photography at the School of Art; David Pease, professor emeritus of painting at the School of Art; Cesar Pelli, former dean of the School of Architecture; Alec Purves, professor of architecture; and Jessica Stockholder, associate professor and director of graduate studies in sculpture at the School of Art.

Alumni, staff and members of the Yale community will have works represented in a silent auction, which will be open for viewing starting at noon on April 27th. A related exhibition of works on paper from the untitled(space), "The Flatfile," runs through June 30.

Along with contributions of artwork featured at the opening, the University itself has played an important role in helping Artspace secure this new 5,000-square-foot space. As part of its community investment program, Yale contributed interim gallery and office space to Artspace for two and a half years, providing support while the organization was being rebuilt. The University also supports Artspace through the contribution of the full-time services of a President's Public Service Fellow during the summer, and Yale has been a key sponsor of the annual City-Wide Open Studios.

Architect Michael Haverland, assistant professor and codirector of the School of Architecture's Urban Design Workshop, designed the space to incorporate large and small galleries, space for collaborative community projects, a video installation room, an artist's studio and a café/lounge. These renovations were made possible with support assembled from the city, the state and Ninth Square L.P.'s building improvement funds.

Benefit tickets for the auction are $50 (good towards live bids) and can be obtained by calling (203) 772-2709. Work can be previewed at: www.artspacenh.org. The benefit chair is Dr. Gualberto Ruano '92 M.D./Ph.D., chair of Genaissance Pharmaceuticals.
