Alumni to be honored for
their service to the University

Five Yale graduates will be honored for their outstanding service to the University at the annual spring assembly of the Association of Yale Alumni (AYA).

The AYA will present its highest award, the Yale Medal, to these individuals at a dinner to be held at University Commons on Friday, April 26.

Each April, the Yale Medal is awarded alumni in recognition of their individual service to the University. All told, 237 individuals have received the honor since it was established in 1952. The winners are chosen both for their devotion to the ideals of the University, and for their exemplary voluntary service on behalf of Yale as a whole or one of its many schools, institutes or programs. It is rarely awarded to those who have served the University primarily as employees, to former members of the Yale Corporation for their work as trustees or to those whose service consists solely of contributing money. It is also not awarded as a recognition for outstanding career accomplishments or service to society.

Brief profiles of this year's winners follow:

Malcolm K. Brachman, Class of 1946, has been a member of both the Yale University Council and the Committee for the Division of Physical Sciences and chair of the advisory committee of Yale's Economic Growth Center. Brachman was president of the Yale Club of Dallas and a member of the executive committee of his class, and he spearheaded the Southwest Regional Campaign for Yale. His philanthropic support of the University led to the establishment in 1971 of the Malcolm K. Brachman Professorship in Economic Demography and the Wendy Blanning Prize at the School of Architecture in 1976. Brachman has been associate fellow of Timothy Dwight College since 1976. In October of 1998, he was awarded the Yale Presidential Medal. Brachman is president of Northwest Oil Company and lives in Dallas, Texas.

Walter H. Brown is a member of the Class of 1945W. This class, disrupted by the war, has earned a reputation as one of Yale's most united and generous classes through the efforts of individuals such as Brown. A successful fundraiser, he led the drives for his class's 50th and 55th reunion gifts. He has been actively involved with Yale as a volunteer, serving as president of the Yale Club of Central New Jersey, vice-chair of the Alumni Board, treasurer of the 1945W Class council and a member of the Yale Development Board. Brown is an investment banker with Brown Brothers Harriman and Company, and lives in Madison, New Jersey and Vero Beach, Florida.

Richard Gilder, as a member of the Class Council of the Class of 1954, conceived of the "Yale 54/50 Fund" that resulted in a gift to Yale of more than $70,000,000, a record in alumni giving that will help support the construction of two state-of-the-art engineering and science facilities. Gilder has been instrumental in helping to establish two major initiatives. The first -- the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance and Abolition-- springs from his interest in the Civil War and in the caliber of Yale's academic courses of study. The second, the Gilder Boathouse, a state-of-the-art rowing facility located in Derby, Connecticut, is helping continue Yale's long history of rowing excellence. Gilder, who lives in New York City, is a stockbroker with Gilder Gagnon Howe and Company.

J. Robert Mann Jr., Class of 1951E, has worked to advance the quality and visibility of Yale's undergraduate programs, particularly in the field of engineering, for 39 years. Mann's support in these two areas has led to the establishment of the Mann Laboratory for Teaching in Electronic Instrumentation and Devices. He has volunteered for Yale in an innumerable number of roles, including membership on the Federation of Yale Alumni Organizations, the Yale Alumni Board and the AYA. Former president of the Yale Science and Engineering Association, Mann received the Yale Science and Engineering Association Award for Meritorious Service to the University in 1990. Mann, who lives in Mamaroneck, New York, is president of E-J Electric Installation Company and E-J Technical Services; he is also chair of E-J Communication Services, Inc.

Ian Mininberg '34 MUS, in his role as a volunteer at the School of Music, has encouraged and arranged alumni gatherings, communications and events for the school for the past six decades. Every dean of the School of Music has expressed appreciation for Mininberg's keen awareness of the school's traditions and needs. In his efforts to keep the school and its alumni closely connected, he served as chair of the Alumni Affairs for the School of Music for 20 years; he also created and edited the alumni magazine, Music at Yale. Mininberg has had a successful career as a concert artist and lecturer; for many years, he owned a music publishing company that provided music education materials to public schools. Mininberg resides in New Haven, Connecticut.

The AYA actively solicits nominations for potential Yale Medalists, and invites all alumni to bring to the association's attention those who have an outstanding record of service to Yale. Mail nominations to: Yale Medal Nominations, Association of Yale Alumni, Box 209010, New Haven, CT 06520-9010 or email nominations to susan.cohn@yale.edu.
