Family nurse practitioner is lauded for her care
Maria Mauldon of the Yale School of Nursing (YSN) has been selected to receive the 2002 American Academy of Nurse Practitioner (AANP) State Award for Excellence.
Mauldon is program instructor and coordinator of the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program at YSN. She is also a family nurse practitioner and chairs the Department of Advanced Practice Nurses at Fair Haven Community Health Center in New Haven.
Every year, AANP recognizes nurse practitioners in each state who make significant contributions to the improvement of care for individuals, families and communities. Through this award, the AANP seeks to raise public awareness about the high-quality, cost-effective characteristics of nurse practitioner-delivered primary care.
For over 14 years Mauldon has mentored nurse practitioners and family practice physicians in delivering family-centered, culturally sensitive care.
"Not only has Ms. Mauldon nurtured our FNP program, she consistently prepares future FNP's who are critical thinkers and excellent clinicians who are committed to social justice," says YSN Dean Catherine Gilliss.
Presently, Mauldon's caseload consists of approximately 400 patients, the majority of whom are minorities and live close to or below the government's definition of poverty. In order to better meet the needs of her patients, about half of whom speak Spanish, Mauldon immersed herself in learning the language and has become bilingual. That skill has made her a preferred provider for Spanish-speaking patients at the Fair Haven center.
"Ms. Mauldon is a role model in the community that she serves," says Courtney Lyder, director of the Adult, Family, Gerontological and Women's Health Primary Care Specialty at YSN.
Katrina Clark, administrator at Fair Haven Community Health Center, adds, "Her focus remains on closing the health disparities for the Latino population, and she continuously works to improve their health by providing family-centered care."
Mauldon was hired at YSN in August of 1998 with a joint appointment at the school and the Yale Health Plan. In July of 1999, she returned to the Fair Haven Health Center, and has had a joint appointment with Fair Haven and YSN since that time.
