Though not natives of New Haven, four Yale School of Nursing students have made a commitment to the local community by establishing a scholarship fund at the city's Career High School.
The fund being created by the students -- Carrie Szejk, Molly Steele, Kipp Bovey and Mica Muskat -- will help graduates of Career High, a magnet school that prepares students for careers in the health professions, to attend nursing school.
To raise the money, the students will head for the hills -- or, rather, the mountains -- and will spend one month this summer hiking the Long Trail in Vermont, a 280-mile trek extending along the state's border with Massachusetts to its border with Canada. Altogether, the trail covers 54 mountains.
The four women -- who call themselves the Mountaingales, after the pioneer nurse, Florence Nightingale -- will carry 30- to 40-pound backpacks, toting sleeping bags, stoves, food, tents and lots of first-aid supplies.
In addition to aiding local students, the Mountaingales hope the trip will publicize the need to promote nursing careers in a time of great nursing shortage, as well as the importance of community action and outdoor activity. To contribute to the Mountaingales' scholarship fund, send a check made payable to Mica Muskat to: Mountaingales, c/o Alexandra Bovey, Yale School of Nursing, P.O. Box 9740, New Haven, CT 06536. For more information, contact Mica Muskat at (203) 468-7575 or mica.muskat@yale.edu.
