While much attention has been paid to the vulnerability of the U.S. infrastructure to terrorist attack, a Yale conference on "Cybo-Terrorism" will explore the potential threat to the nation's computer networks.
The event -- the 2002 Alan J. Perlis Symposium, sponsored by the Department of Computer Science -- will take place 9:15 a.m.-5:15 p.m. on Thursday, May 2, in the auditorium of Luce Hall, 34 Hillhouse Ave. Admission is free, and the public is invited.
The symposium will address such questions as: "How much damage could a hostile agent cause by invading the country's computing networks to steal resources, gather information or make the networks unusable?" "Is the threat of attack imminent?" And "Is there any way to thwart such an attack without damage to the nation's civil liberties?"
The four experts who will address these questions are:
* Jeffrey Hunker, dean of the Carnegie-Mellon University H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management and former senior director for Critical Infrastructure, National Security Council;
* David L. Sobel, general counsel of the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) and former counsel to the National Security Archive;
* Matt Blaze, research scientist and computer security expert at AT&T Labs Research; and
* Scott Charney, a principal at PricewaterhouseCoopers and recently appointed chief security strategist for Microsoft Corporation.

"Robot Showdown 2002" is free and open to all.
