Texas Rangers are subject of historian's talk

Robert M. Utley, the Frederick W. and Carrie S. Beinecke Senior Research Fellow in Western and Frontier History, will deliver a lecture on Thursday, May 2, at 5 p.m. in Sudler Hall, William L. Harkness Hall, 100 Wall St.

Titled "The Texas Rangers in History and Legend," the lecture coincides with the release of Utley's most recent book, "Lone Star Justice: The First Century of the Texas Rangers." Copies of his book will be made available for purchase by the Yale Bookstore at this event for the author to sign.

Utley is a leading scholar of the frontier army and Indian-white relations in the West. A former chief historian of the National Park Service, Utley is a founding member and former president of the Western History Association and the author of 15 books and dozens of scholarly articles. His biography of Sitting Bull, "The Lance and the Shield," received the Western History Association's Caughey Prize, awarded annually to the best book published in the field of Western history, as well as the Spur Award of the Western Writers of America. Nine of his books have been selections of the History Book Club and seven of the Book of the Month Club.

The event, sponsored by the Howard R. Lamar Center for the Study of Frontiers and Borders, is free and open to the public. A reception will follow at the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, located at the corner of Wall and High streets.
