Two concerts of Brahms' chamber music will be presented by advanced students from the Yale School of Music and Yale College at 8 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, May 2 and 3, in the Branford College common room.
The featured performers were coached by Michael Friedmann, professor (adjunct) of composition and the theory of music, as part of Music 344b, a seminar that relates analysis to performance with a focus on the special tension expressed in Brahms' music between his adherence to classical predecessors and his own highly individual expressive content.
The May 2 program features the Variations for Piano Four-Hands on a Theme by Schumann, op. 23 (played by John Chin, YC '02, and Kamilla Arku, YC '04); the Sonata in E flat for clarinet and piano, op. 120/2 (played by Benjamin Baron, MM '02, and Eric Dudley, MM '03); and the Quartet in c, op. 60 for piano and strings (played by Ilya Poletaev, MM '03, David Colwell, MM '03, Matthew Young, MM '02, and Yves Dharamraj, YC '03).
The May 3 program features three trios: the piano trio, op. 101 in c (played by Mike Lee, MM '03, Angela Early, YC '02, and Julie Jung, MM '02); the clarinet trio, op. 114 in a (played by Mingzhe Wang, MM '03, Na-young Baek, MM '02, and Mei Rui, YC '05); and the piano trio op. 87 in C (played by Michael Mizrahi, MM '03, Sarah Pratt, MM '02, and James Lin, AD '03).
