The Reverend
Frederick J. Streets

Streets is reappointed as chaplain and is
named acting master of Trumbull College

The Reverend Frederick J. Streets has been reappointed as chaplain of the University and pastor of the Church of Christ in Yale for another five-year term, and will serve as acting master of Trumbull College for the 2002-2003 academic year, President Richard C. Levin has announced.

Streets will fill in as master for Dr. Janet Henrich, director of the Women's Health Program and associate professor of internal medicine (obstetrics and gynecology), who will be on a leave of absence for the academic year. His wife, Annette Streets, will act as associate master, filling in for Victor Henrich, the Eugene Higgins Professor of Applied Science, Applied Physics and Physics, who will be on leave with his wife.

Streets has been chaplain of the University and senior pastor of the Church of Christ in Yale since 1992. In addition to his pastoral appointment, he is also an adjunct member of the faculty at the Yale Divinity School and is a clinical social worker at the Yale Child Study Center.

In announcing Streets' reappointment as chaplain, Levin said, "In his work as University chaplain, senior pastor at Battell [Chapel], spiritual adviser to many in times of trouble, and ambassador for the University both in New Haven and increasingly around the world, Reverend Streets has been an outstanding contributor to the life of this institution. His presence has been helpful to so many over the years, and never more so than in the difficult days following Sept. 11."

In his announcement of Streets' appointment as acting master, Levin noted that the Yale chaplain has been engaged in both issues affecting the City of New Haven and those in troubled regions of the world. As a consultant to the Harvard Program in Refugee Trauma and in conjunction with the mental health community of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Streets helped implement a model for the psychiatric and pastoral care of Bosnian citizens who were traumatized by war. He also traveled to Colombia, South America, to promote peace-making there and to Buenos Aires, Argentina, as part of an effort to foster a greater understanding of the nonprofit sector's relationship to higher education. Streets was a delegate to the first world conference of religious leaders ever to convene at the United Nations, Levin noted.

Closer to home, Streets has been a member of the New Haven Board of Police Commissioners for the last six years and is co-chair of the Ward One Democratic Town Committee, which is made up predominately of Yale College students.

Prior to coming to Yale, he was senior pastor of the Mount Aery Baptist Church in Bridgeport, Connecticut, for 17 years. He earned his master's degree from the Yale Divinity School in 1975 and holds a doctorate from Yeshiva University Wurzweiler School of Social Work.

Annette Streets, a 1984 graduate of the Yale Divinity School, has had a noted career in nonprofit social service administration. She was the founding director of the Charles E. Smith Foundation in Bridgeport and has directed numerous programs serving the needs of families, children and youth. Most recently she served as the assistant director of the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute.

"As long-time members of the Yale community, close to many students and faculty, and with a deep understanding of the University's principles and practices, Jerry and Annette Streets are a perfect choice to take the leadership of Trumbull during this interim year," said President Levin in his letter to the Trumbull College community.

The Streets' have three grown children and four grandchildren. They will begin their temporary roles at Trumbull on July 1, when the pastor also begins his new term as University chaplain.
