Midwife wins honor for her contributions

Lynette Ament
X
Lynette Ament, an associate professor at the School of Nursing, received the 2002 Kitty Ernst Award, one of the most prestigious honors presented to members of the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM).

Known as "the Young Whippersnapper Award," the honor is named after Kitty Ernst, ACNM's fourth president and one of its "living legends." The award honors a midwife who has been certified for less than 10 years and has demonstrated innovative, creative endeavors in clinical practice, education, administration or research in relation to midwifery and/or women's health.

Ament, who is the fifth recipient of the award, was honored on May 24 at the group's annual meeting and exhibit in Atlanta, Georgia. As is traditional, she was adorned with a purple hat and boa, replicas of those annually worn by the award's namesake.

"Lynette has exhibited exceptional leadership ability and has accomplished much during her nine short years as a nurse-midwife," said ACNM President Mary Ann Shah, when presenting the award. "She is recognized for her potential to become a powerful and positive activist for midwifery care, and for women."

A a young graduate, Ament's were to teach and start the first midwifery practice in her community. It wasn't long before she accomplished both. Simultaneously, she wrote widely for scholarly publications while becoming active in ACNM's Political and Economic Affairs Committee, as well as in her two local chapters. She later became a section chair within the new Division of Women's Health Policy & Leadership.

In 1997, she moved from the Midwest to become the director of Yale's nurse-midwifery education program. In this capacity, she has been responsible for meeting the needs of an expanding student population, promoting a collaborative relationship between obstetric residents and midwives, writing training grants and helping to develop the faculty practice into one which offers 24-hour coverage to midwifery patients. In the words of one of her nominators, "She is not only goal-driven, but is one who accomplishes her goals. In this way, she exhibits some of the energy and conviction that Kitty Ernst made legendary."
