As of the 2000-2001 academic year, Edison was operating 135 elementary, middle and high schools in 21 states and the District of Columbia, either in partnerships with local school districts or as charter schools. Edison schools serve some 75,000 students and employ about 6,000 educators.

Schmidt has led Edison since 1992, after serving as Yale University's 20th president. Before beginning his tenure at Yale in 1986, he was dean of Columbia University Law School, where he joined the faculty in 1969. He is a leading scholar of the Constitution, the history of the U.S. Supreme Court, the law of freedom of expression and the history of race relations in America.
