Divinity Dean, faculty serving as presidents of scholarly groups
The dean of the Divinity School and two of the school's faculty members are serving as presidents of leading academy organizations this year.
Rebecca Chopp, dean of the Divinity School and the Titus Street Professor of Theology and Culture, is president of the American Academy of Religion (AAR), the world's largest association of academics who research or teach topics related to religion. The AAR is dedicated to promoting the academic study of religion in all its dimensions.
Harry W. Attridge, the Lillian Claus Professor of New Testament, is currently president of the Society of Bibilical Literature (SBL). Founded in 1880, SBL supports the study of the Bible, and strives to enrich and to broaden participation in the study of the ancient Near Eastern and Mediterranean world.
Gene Outka, the Dwight Professor of Philosophy of Christian Ethics, is serving as president of the Society of Christian Ethics. The society promotes scholarly work in the field of Christian ethics and in the relation of Christian ethics to other traditions of ethics and to social, economic, political and cultural problems.
