Veterans Day celebration

All members of the Yale community are invited to attend a Veterans Day ceremony to honor Yale graduates who served honorably in the military -- in wartime and peacetime -- on Monday, Nov. 11 at noon on Hewitt Quadrangle, outside the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library. The Yale Student Military Organization is sponsoring the brief ceremony, which will include color guard, national anthem and remarks.

Flu shots

The School of Nursing, 100 Church Street South, will hold a flu vaccination session on Friday, Nov. 15. The session will be administered by nursing students and faculty, in collaboration with the Yale Health Plan. All members of the Yale community are eligible to get flu shots.

Thanksgiving announcement

The Office of International Students and Scholars is continuing its tradition of matching up international students and scholars with American hosts for Thanksgiving dinner.

There are more than 2,500 international students and scholars in New Haven. Individuals who would like to host an international student for Thanksgiving dinner should call Sharon Butler at (203) 432-2305 or send e-mail to sharon.butler@yale.edu.

Preschool open house

A preschool, day care and kindergarten open house will be held at the Calvin Hill Day Care Center on Saturday, Nov. 16, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

Located at 150 Highland St., between Whitney Ave. and Prospect St., the center is a nationally-accredited, full-day facility for community and university families. Tuition is set on a sliding scale according to income. Teachers work with three separate groups of children, ranging in age from three-year-olds to six-year-olds. The center is open 8 a.m.-5:15 p.m., and also offers a summer program.

For more information, call Carla Horwitz at (203) 764-9350.

YUWO benefit

The Yale University Women's Organization (YUWO) will hold a scholarship benefit and tea on Sunday, Nov. 17, 4-6 p.m., at the Sterling Memorial Library lecture hall.

Gaddis Smith, the Larned Professor Emeritus of History, will speak on "The History of Women at Yale," which is based on research conducted for his forthcoming book "Yale the Extended World: The Shaping of the University in the 20th Century."

The fee is $15; proceeds will benefit YUWO's scholarship fund. Tea and sherry will be provided. The event is open to the public.

Holiday food drive

The Yale Medical Group is currently holding its third annual holiday food collection drive.

Items will be donated to the Connecticut Food Bank, whose warehouse in East Haven is the largest centralized source of donated emergency food for Connecticut. The food bank donates to local soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters and day care centers in the greater New Haven area. Last year the Yale Medical Group collected 750 items for a total of 645 pounds of food.

Donations may be made 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday, at the Yale Physicians Building, 800 Howard Ave., and at 300 George St., 6th floor. Food baskets are located in the main lobby at each location.
