Proceeds from students' auction will help
fight hunger and homelessness in New Haven

An auction to raise funds for organizations that are working to fight hunger and homelessness in New Haven will be presented this month by volunteers in the School of Medicine, the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health (EPH) and the School of Nursing.

The Hunger and Homelessness Auction was created 10 years ago by students at the medical school and EPH who were interested in alleviating hunger and homelessness in the Greater New Haven area. Last year, the event raised over $30,000 and provided grants to the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen, Douglas House, St. Thomas More, Loaves and Fishes, New Haven Home Recovery Inc. and New Haven Cares.

By uniting the students and faculty of the health professional schools with local businesses, the auction seeks to raise awareness and funds for community organizations devoted to issues of hunger and homelessness.

The sometimes whimsical donations -- everything from a week in a London flat to sushi-making lessons for 10 -- are sold to the highest bidder during both the live and silent auctions. In conjunction with the auction, there is a weeklong series of events including lectures, a canned food drive and additional fund-raisers, such as a benefit flag-football game and karaoke night at the medical school.

The silent auction will be held Monday-Thursday, Nov. 18-21, in front of the Harvey Cushing-John Hay Whitney Medical Library, Sterling Hall of Medicine, 333 Cedar St. The live auction will take place 4-6 p.m. on Nov. 21 in Harkness Auditorium, Sterling Hall of Medicine; wine and cheese will be served. The silent auction will end when the live auction begins. Participants should be prepared to pay by cash or check at the time of purchase.

All the events are open to the public. For more information, visit the website at www.yale.edu/hhauction or send e-mail to the 2002 Hunger and Homelessness Auction Committee at hhauction@yale.edu.
