The School of Music and the Neighborhood Music School will present the next event in its "Informal Introductions" to the Horowitz Piano Series on Monday, Nov. 18, at 6:30 p.m. John Platoff, a professor of music at Trinity College in Hartford, will present a lecture and perform works by Schubert, Webern and Chopin. The event will take place at the Trinity Lutheran Church, corner of Wall and Orange streets. Tickets are $10 for the concert and lecture; $5 for the lecture only. Robert Burt, the Alexander M. Bickel Professor of Law, delivered a keynote address on Oct. 29 at a University of Haifa conference on the challenges and fears of the end of human life. The event was sponsored by the University of Haifa Faculty of Law, the International Center for Health, Law, and Ethics, and the Israel Society for Health and Law. Burt's topic was "Rationalizing Death: A Perilous Enterprise." The conference brought together leading physicians, jurists and academicians to discuss legal and ethical aspects of the right to die.
Dr. Margaret K. Hostetter has been named chief of pediatrics at Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital and chair of the department at the Yale School of Medicine. Hostetter received her M.D. from the Baylor College of Medicine, where she ranked first in her class. Since 1998, she has been a professor of pediatrics at Yale-New Haven Medical Center, director of the Yale Child Health Research Center and section chief for the department of immunology.
Jonathan Ingersoll, the Adrian C. Israel Professor of International Trade & Finance, has been named the 2002 International Association of Financial Engineers [IAFE]/SunGard Financial Engineer of the Year. The award will be presented on Feb. 4 at the United Nations during the IAFE's annual awards dinner. The award recognizes individual contributions to the advancement of financial engineering technology. Ingersoll was selected for his historic contributions to research and education in multiple areas of finance and economics.
