Housing listing service

Yale Off-Campus Housing has announced that it now accepting applications for listing homes for sale on its website.

This service is restricted to members of the Yale community who wish to offer their homes for sale to other University personnel. Applications will not be accepted from realtors or agents. For more information, call (203) 432-9756.


Holiday food drive

The Yale Medical Group is currently holding its third annual holiday food collection drive.

Items will be donated to the Connecticut Food Bank, whose warehouse in East Haven is the largest centralized source of donated emergency food for Connecticut. The food bank donates to local soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters and day care centers in the greater New Haven area. Last year the Yale Medical Group collected 750 items for a total of 645 pounds of food.

Donations may be made 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday, at the Yale Physicians Building, 800 Howard Ave., and at 300 George St., 6th floor. Food baskets are located in the main lobby at each location.


Adult Workshop at BAC

Scott Wilcox, curator of prints and drawings at the Yale Center for British Art, will conduct an adult workshop, titled "From Drawing to Painting: The Rise of the British Art of Watercolor," on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Wilcox will trace the transformation of watercolor in Britain from its utilitarian origins in the seventeenth century to its heyday as a major art form in the Romantic period. He will provide an historical appreciation of artists such as J.M.W. Turner, Thomas Girtin and Richard Parkes Bonington. One session will be devoted to a hands-on demonstration of watercolor techniques and materials.

Peabody exhibition

The Peabody Museum of Natural History will host an event for families titled "Dazzling Discoveries: The World of Rocks, Gems and Minerals" in conjunction with the opening of the new exhibit "Digging for Meaning: Rocks, Gems and the Yale Seal."

The event will run 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, and is free with museum admission ($5 for adults, $3 for children ages 3-15, and seniors over 65), membership or Yale ID.

Kevin Krajick, a prizewinning journalist and author, will give a talk titled "The Secret Hunt for North American Diamonds" at noon in the auditorium. Children will be able to pick up a crystal growing kit and find out how to grow their own crystals at home. Families will be able to see and touch local rocks and minerals, learn about the importance of rocks and minerals in daily life, and watch demonstrations of gem cutting and stone polishing. Experts will be on hand to answer questions about rocks and minerals as well as the processes of polishing, cutting and tumbling.

Call for student volunteers

Programs in International Educational Resources (PIER) will be hosting more than 100 high school students for a "Discover the World Workshop" at the Center for International and Area Studies on Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 8 and 9.

Yale student volunteers are needed to serve on four panels to discuss their personal international experiences and/or international issues to a group of about 40 high school students.

Panel participants will be expected to make a brief presentation of their experiences, such as study abroad or international student perspective on the U.S. and/or their interests for approximately 10 minutes. The high school students would then have the opportunity to ask questions. Times for the panel discussions are either 11 a.m.-noon or 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on both days. Panel members are welcome to participate or observe in any of the other activities that day which include an intercultural communication simulation in the morning and lunch for Yale participants.

Volunteers should indicate their preferred dates and times, name, e-mail address and phone number. Depending on the interests of the panelists, some day and time adjustment may be necessary.

Christmas Tree sale

The student chapter of the Society of American Foresters at the School of Forestry & Environmental Design is having its annual Christmas tree sale on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 13 and 14.

All trees are grown at the Yale-Myers Forest in Eastford, Connecticut, by students at the school. Trees are certified sustainable by both the Forest Stewardship Council and the Sustainable Forest Initiative. White and blue spruce will be available. All trees are $6 per foot. White pine boughs will be available at $5 per bundle.

Trees may be pre-ordered by calling (203) 432-8800 by Wednesday, Dec. 11. Trees will be available for pick-up at Marsh Lawn, 360 Prospect St., on Friday, Dec. 13, 5-8 p.m., and Saturday, Dec. 14, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Trees should be picked up by noon on Saturday at the latest.


Tax Department notice

The University Tax Department has issued a notice for non-U.S. citizens.

Any non-U.S. citizens who are currently claiming a reduced federal income tax withholding rate (including a full exemption from withholding) on payments pursuant to a tax treaty may need to complete updated tax forms for the calendar year 2003.

The Forms 8233, Exemption from Withholding on Compensation for Independent Personal Services of a Nonresident Alien Individual, are only valid for the tax year for which they are filed. Current Forms 8233 will expire on Dec. 31.

The Forms W-8BEN, Certificate of Foreign Status of Beneficial Owner for United States Withholding are effective for three calendar years. Forms W-8BEN filed in the calendar year 2000 will expire on Dec. 31.

All individuals who are currently claiming a reduced withholding rate pursuant to a tax treaty and whose exemption forms will expire on Dec. 31 (that is, those who filed a 2002 Form 8233 or a Form W-8BEN in the calendar year 2000) will be notified by letter or e-mail. The letter will instruct those individuals to schedule an appointment and meet with the University Tax Department prior to Dec. 19 in order to file updated treaty election forms.

The Tax Department is currently scheduling appointments with these individuals, to be held Nov. 18-Dec. 19.
