O'Neill sisters earn automatic qualification for NCAA track competition
The Yale indoor track season is just underway but two Bulldogs have already made a national impact.
In the first indoor event of the winter season, senior twin sisters Kate and Laura O'Neill of Milton, Massachusetts, earned automatic qualification for the NCAA Indoor Track Championships.
The O'Neills, who became the earliest indoor NCAA qualifiers ever from Yale, placed first and second in the 5,000 meters at the Northeastern Invitational held the weekend of Dec. 6. Kate O'Neill ranked first with a time of 16:02.96, with Laura O'Neill less than a second behind at 16:03.75. The latter sister bested her distance record from last season by over 30 seconds.
Only seven individuals and two relay units from Yale have qualified for the indoor NCAAs since the inception of the sport at the University. The 2003 event will take place March 14-15 at Fayetteville, Arkansas.
This will be the second trip to the indoor NCAAs for Kate O'Neill, who finished ninth last year in the 3,000 meters. The O'Neills recently completed their last cross country season at Yale at the NCAA Cross Country Championships -- where Kate took second, which was the best performance ever by an Ivy runner, while Laura was 13th.
Kate O'Neill is a three-time All-American and three-time first team All-Ivy selection in both cross country and track, and received Academic All-Ivy honors her junior year. She is the reigning Indoor Heptagonal and ECAC champion in 3,000 meters.
Laura O'Neill, who will run at her first indoor NCAAs, is a three-time All-American and All-Ivy in cross country and track. Laura won the team award last season and was the track MVP. She was also named an Academic All-American and Academic All-Ivy. She is also the Indoor Heptagonals champion in 5,000 meters.
