Talk and tour to highlight event
honoring birth of Ben Franklin

The Friends of Franklin and the Yale University Press are celebrating the birthday of founding father Benjamin Franklin (albeit a day late) with a talk and tour to be held Saturday, Jan. 18.

The event will feature a talk by Edmund S. Morgan, Sterling Professor Emeritus of History and author of the new biography "Benjamin Franklin" recently published by the Yale Press. Participants will then have the opportunity to tour the Franklin Collection in Yale's Sterling Memorial Library, 120 High St.

Modestly described by Morgan as "a character sketch that got out of hand," the book about the famed inventor and founding father (who was born Jan. 17, 1706 and died at age 84) began as an introductory essay to the Yale University/Packard Humanities Institute's CD-ROM of Franklin's writings. The book, which has been hailed as "the best short biography of Franklin ever written," is currently a New York Times bestseller and has been designated by that newspaper as a "Notable Book of the Year." It has also been named "Best Book of 2002" by Publishers Weekly and Amazon.com.

Morgan -- who has the same birth date as Franklin, and will turn 87 this year -- is the author of more than a dozen books and received the National Humanities Medal in 2000. He taught at Yale 1965-1986 and is currently chair of the administrative board of The Papers of Benjamin Franklin, a major Yale-based project to publish the patriot's writings.

The Yale scholar's lecture will follow the annual Franklin Birthday luncheon, to be held at noon at the New Haven Lawn Club, 193 Whitney Ave. Morgan will be available to sign copies of his book following his talk. Tours of the Franklin Collection will take place 3-5 p.m.

Tickets for the event, which includes lunch, are $25 per person. The deadline for reservations is Jan. 10. Seating is limited. To make a reservation, call the editorial offices of The Papers of Benjamin Franklin at (203) 432-1814 or send e-mail to kate.ohno@yale.edu.
