A conference titled "Revolutionary Traditions and the Law: France and the United States" will take be presented Friday-Saturday, Sept. 20-21, by the Whitney Humanities Center, 53 Wall St.
The conference was organized by John Q. Whitman, the Ford Foundation Professor of Comparative and Foreign Law, and Peter Brooks, Sterling Professor of Comparative Literature and French.
They write: "With the collapse of Communism, the American and French revolutions stand alone as living revolutionary traditions in the western world. But what do they stand for? ... The passions of the American revolution continue to dominate American politics. In French politics, the tradition of the revolution has never died. Yet if both countries have survivng revolutionary traditions, those traditions do seem to stand for deeply divergent values."
The aim of the conference, the organizers note, is "to bring Americans into contact with French colleagues ... to confront openly the value differences that separate so many of us."
The event is free and open to the public. For a complete schedule or more information, send e-mail to manana.sikic@yale.edu.
