Members of the men's basketball time took some time out for sightseeing during their 10-day trip to Italy in August. Here, they ganged up for a group shot in front of the Coliseum in Rome.

Sports and music were on the
agenda in groups' trips abroad

Two of the Yale groups that took to the road this summer were the men's basketball team, which traveled and competed in Italy, and the Yale Glee Club, which toured five African nations.

Along with Coach James Jones, the basketball team spent 10 days in Italy, Aug. 10-20. The Bulldogs visited Rome, Milan, Como, Venice and Florence. While there, the Bulldgos played against four professional Italian teams -- topping the Tuscany Select 91-73, but falling to Lauretana 109-79, Castelletto 85-80 and Treviglio 99-94.

Photos from that trip and diary entries by the players are available at www.yale.edu/athletic .

The Yale Glee Club fulfilled a longtime dream for its director, David Connell, and became one of the first American university choruses to travel extensively in Africa during their concert tour there May 28-June 24.

The 80 members of the Yale Glee Club visited and performed in Dakar, Senegal; Marrakech, Morocco; Windhoek and Swakopmund, Namibia; Durban and Cape Town, South Africa; and Port Louis, Mauritius.

Under the baton of conductor Ellen Espenschied, the group sang with six local groups, including the University of Namibia Choir, the University of Cape Town Choir and the Music Conservatory of Mauritius. They performed for local audiences at such venues as the Douta Seck Cultural Center in Dakar and the Opera Theater in Marrakech. They also sang in orphanages, hospitals and a Berber village in the High Atlas Mountains.
