"Medea/Macbeth/Cinderella," conceived by Bill Rauch of the Cornerstone Theater Company, is adapted from Euripides' "Medea," William Shakespeare's "Macbeth" and Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Cinderella." Sometimes the works will unfold simultaneously, and at other times they will spill into each other -- with each intensifying and illuminating the other two.
The Yale Rep production is a new version of "Medea/Macbeth/Cinderella," which Rauch originally conceived during his senior year of college in 1984. An early version of the play was produced in 1998 by the Cornerstone Theater Company, which Rauch cofounded, and The Actor's Gang in Los Angeles.
Rauch and Tracy Young, co-adapter of "Medea/Macbeth/Cinderella," will direct the Yale production, which begins on Friday, Sept. 20, at the University Theatre, 222 York St. The show will run through Oct. 12. Opening night is Thursday, Sept. 26.
The 27-member cast is led by Caroline Clay as Medea, Stephen Pelinski and Christopher Liam Moore as Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, and Heather Mazur as Cinderella. An all-female company will play the other roles in "Medea," while an all-male company will perform the other roles in "Macbeth." A mixed group performs the other characters in the "Cinderella" portion of the play.
Rauch, a graduate of Harvard College, has directed over 40 of the Cornerstone Theater Company's productions since he founded the theater in 1986. He serves as its artistic director. He has received L.A. Weekly, Drama-Louge, Garland and Helen Hayes Awards, and he has twice been nominated for the Ovation Award for Best Director.
Young is a writer and director who creates original work for the stage in collaboration with other theater artists. From 1987 to 2000 she was a member of The Actor's Gang. Her original work includes the musical "Hysteria," which won an Ovation Award for best direction and was a P.E.N. West Playwriting finalist, and the "drug fantasia" "Euphoria," which won Ovation and L.A. Weekly Awards for musical of the year and was Entertainment Weekly's selection as Production of the Year.
Cast member Clay was last seen at the Rep in "Crumbs from the Table of Joy," and she has also appeared in the Off-Broadway productions "Funnyhouse of a Negro," "Medea" and "Joe Turner's Come and Gone."
Pelinski has played over 30 leading roles in classical plays at theaters across the country. He has been voted into the Guthrie Theater's Hall of Fame.
Mazur, a student at the School of Drama, appeared in the Yale Rep production of "Iphigeneia at Aulis." She has appeared in the Off-Broadway productions of "Stop Kiss" and "Playing for Time" as well as the film "Night of the Living Dead."
Moore, a founding member of the Cornerstone Theatre Company, has twice been nominated for an Ovation award. He has performed in numerous theaters across the country and in such television shows as "Friends," "Third Rock from the Sun," "Star Trek: Voyager" and "Judging Amy."
Performing in the role of Godmother is Alain Reed Hall, who taught an entire generation to read and write as "Olivia" on "Sesame Street." She has appeared in a number of Broadway productions and in the films as "Death Becomes Her," "Cruel Intentions" and "The Cherokee Kid."
Other members of the cast are Jennifer Griffin, Jayne Houdyshell, Kate Mulligan, Joan Schirle, Latrice Hampton, Staysha Silva, David Paul Francis, Horace Little, Peter Macon, Peter Howard, Ryan King, Derek Lucci, Adam O'Byrne, Maulik Pancholy, Terry Burrell, Stefani Cvijetic, Peter Kim, Jennifer Lim, April Ortiz, Dan Parker and Christopher Wells.
The other members of the production team include composer Shishir Kurup; music director Steven Argila; set designer Rachel Hauck; costume designer David Zinn; lighting designer Jennifer Tipton; sound designer David Budries; production stage manager Karen Quisenberry; and production dramaturgs Mark Bly and Christine Evangelisto.
Performances are at 8 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday, with Saturday matinees at 2 p.m. There is a special Monday evening performance on Sept. 23 at 8 p.m. and a Wednesday matinee on Oct. 9 at 2 p.m.
The Rep will offer a variety of special events during the run of "Medea/Macbeth/Cinderella." These include "College Night" on Friday, Sept. 20; opening night on Thursday, Sept. 26;"Re:Play," a question-and-answer session with the cast and crew following the matinee performance on Sept. 28; and a senior matinee on Wednesday, Oct. 9. A sign-interpreted performance will be offered on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 2 p.m. and an audio-described performance will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 2 p.m.
