Physician to discuss how patients benefit from information technology
Dr. Robert H. Friedman, professor of medicine and public health at Boston University, and chief of the Medical Information Systems Unit (MIS) at Boston Medical Center, will speak to the Ethics and Technology working research group on Wednesday, March 5.
Friedman will discuss "Better Health through Information Technology" at 4:15 p.m. in Rm. 110 at the School of Nursing, 100 Church St. South. The lecture is co-sponsored by the Health Behaviors and Lifestyles working research group and is free and open to the public. For information and dinner reservations, contact Carol Pollard at (203) 432-6188 or carol.pollard@yale.edu.
Friedman's work over the last 20 years has focused on the use of computers and telecommunication technology to deliver health services directly to patients and consumers. He is currently the principal investigator on six grants, and the author or co-author of more than 60 journal articles.
Friedman has been involved in the development and evaluation of a computer-based telecommunications system that will carry out regular automated telephone conversations with patients with chronic disease. The telecommunications system is used to monitor the patients' health status and assess their understanding of and compliance with their treatment regimen.
His talk will explore how users react to new technologies, the effect of these technologies on health outcomes, and ethical issues they raise.
