Yale Rep show offers new and old twists on Shakespeare's 'Taming of the Shrew'

For its next offering, the Yale Repertory Theatre will present Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew" as it would have been staged in the days of the bard -- when men were men and played the women's roles too.

Director Mark Lamos will make his Yale Rep debut with this production of the classic battle of the sexes, which will run March 21-April 12.

Set in the here and now of contemporary Latino culture, this production explores -- and seeks to explode -- the play's themes of role-playing, transformation and sexuality by staging it with an all-male company of actors. In this production, the hot-tempered Kate is pitted against the equally hot-blooded Petruchio against a landscape that is equal parts Puerto Rico, Havana and New York City's East Village.

Heading the cast are Joseph Urla as Petruchio and Ramón de Ocampo as Kate.

Urla is a 1985 graduate of the Yale School of Drama, whose very first theater credit -- at the age of 13 -- was the role of Petruchio in "The Taming of the Shrew" at Kennedy Junior High. He previously appeared at the Yale Rep in "Heaven," "Search and Destroy" and "Henry IV, Part I." He has performed at regional theaters throughout the country and was in the original Broadway cast of "The Boys Next Door." His film credits include the upcoming "Invitation to a Suicide," "Disclosure," "Deep Impact," "Wedding Bell Blues" and "Bodyguard." He has guest-starred in numerous TV shows and was a series regular on "Delta" and "H.E.L.P."

Ocampo's numerous New York credits include appearances in "The Taming of the Shrew" at the Delacorte Theater, "Dog-eaters" at the New York Shakespeare Festival and "Birth Marks" at the Ensemble Studio Theatre. His regional theater credits include performances in "Romeo and Juliet" as both Juliet (NSCS) and as Romeo (Kennedy Center). His film appearances include "Hamlet," "Personals," "The Look" and "Leadcatcher." His TV credits include "Night Ride Home" (Hallmark Hall of Fame), "Wasteland," "Cosby," "Now and Again" and "Law and Order."

Other cast members include Tom Lee as Biondello, Derek Lucci as the Pedant, Jordan Mahome as Curtis, Tony Manna as the Widow, Bryant Mason as Lucentio, Orlando Pabotoy as Grumio, Jesse Perez as Gremio, Lazaro Perez as Baptista, Thom Rivera as the Tailor and Vincentio, Caesar Samayoa as Bianca, Charles Daniel Sandoval as Hortensio and Triney Sandoval as Tranio, as well as Jesse Gabbard, Rey Lucas, Leroy McClain, Stephen Moore, Adam Richman and Adam Saunders.

Lamos has directed on and off-Broadway and in regional theater. He also directs opera. While artistic director of Connecticut's Hartford Stage (1980-1997), he accepted the Tony Award for the theater's body of work. His New York credits include Broadway's "Our Country's Good" (which won him a Tony nomination for best director), and Albee's "Tiny Alice" and Lincoln Center Theatre's "Measure for Measure" (both received Lortell Awards for Best Revival). For the Metropolitan Opera he directed the world premiere of "The Great Gatsby," as well as "Lombardi" starring Pavarotti. He has also done many productions for the New York City Opera, televised for "Live from Lincoln Center." He was the first American director invited to stage a production with a Russian company, post-glasnost -- "Desire Under the Elms" at Moscow's Pushkin Theatre.

"The Taming of the Shrew" is choreographed by Seán Curran and features scenic design by Leiko Fuseya, costume design by Wade Laboissoniare, lighting design by Scott Bolman, and sound design by David Budries. Mark Bly and John Hanlon are the production dramaturgs. Beth McGuire is the vocal coach. Rick Sordelet is the fight director. Lisa Porter is the stage manager.

The play will be performed at Yale Repertory Theatre, corner of Chapel and York streets, on the following schedule: Tuesday-Saturday at 8 p.m., with matinees on Saturday at 2 p.m. There is a special Monday evening performance on March 24 at 8 p.m. and a Wednesday matinee on April 9 at 2 p.m.

The Yale Rep will offer a variety of special events during the run of "The Taming of the Shrew" at no additional cost. These include "Yale Night" on Friday, March 21, which features a pre-show discussion with members of the creative team as well as free pizza and soft drinks for students from area colleges and universities; "Opening Night" on Thursday, March 27, with a celebration following the performance at Hot Tomato's, "Re:Play," a question-and-answer session with the cast and crew following the matinee performance on Saturday, March 29; and "Senior Matinee" on Wednesday, April 9. In addition there will be a sign-interpreted performance on Saturday, March 29, at 2 p.m. and an audio-described performance on Saturday, April 5, at 2 p.m.

Single tickets are available for all Yale Rep productions, and range from $25 to $40. Senior, student and group rates are also available. Tickets are available by telephone at (203) 432-1234, in person at the Yale Rep box office and online at www.yalerep.org.
