Kumpati Narendra

Kumpati Narendra named as Cheel Professor

Kumpati S. Narendra, newly appointed as the Harold W. Cheel Professor of Electrical Engineering, is internationally known for his work on complex systems that can learn and adapt to new environments.

Director of the Yale Center for Systems Science, Narendra has focused his research on stability theory, learning automata, adaptive control and intelligent control of complex systems using neural networks. In 1963, he was the first to prove the circle criterion. From 1970 to 1990 he systematically explored the field of adaptive control, and in 1980, solved the long-standing stability problem. In 1990, he published a groundbreaking neural-networks research paper which introduced the field of neural control. His work on linear and nonlinear systems is helping to address a wide spectrum of problems in new technologies (e.g., robots, manufacturing, space technology and medical instrumentation).

He is the co-author of the books "Frequency Domain Criteria for Absolute Stability," "Stable Adaptive Systems" and "Learning Automata -- An Introduction," as well as numerous scientific papers. He is editor of "Applications of Adaptive Control," "Adaptive and Learning Sytems," "Learning Automata" and "Advances in Adaptive Control."

Narendra is also renowned for his role as a teacher and mentor. In the past four decades, over 40 doctoral students and over 30 postdoctoral and visiting fellows have come from around the world to work with him.

Born in Madras, India, Narendra received a B.E. degree with honors from Madras University in 1954 and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University in 1955 and 1959, respectively. He was a member of the Harvard faculty from 1961 until 1965, when he joined the Yale faculty. He has served as chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering and since 1979 has organized and hosted 12 Workshops on Adaptive and Learning Systems at Yale. The biennial event, to be held again in May, is known thoughout the world as a forum for the exchange of ideas in the rapidly changing field of adaptive systems.

Narendra has been a consultant to such major corporations as Sikorsky Aircraft, AT&T and General Motors. He has chaired several sessions at national and international conferences, and has lectured around the world.

He has received numerous honors for his work. These include the Ragazzini Education Award of the American Automatic Control Council, the Neural Network Leadership Award of the International Neural Network Society and the Bode Prize from the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). He received three best-paper awards from three different societies of the IEEE:.

A member of the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering, he has received fellowships from the Science and Engineering Research Council of the United Kingdom, the National Science Foundation and from Germany. In 1993, he was awarded a NATO fellowship to give a series of lectures at Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey.
