Yale Opera to perform Scarlatti's 'Il Trionfo dell'onore'
The Yale Opera will put a modern spin on Alessandro Scarlatti's "Il Trionfo dell'onore" ("The Triumph of Honor"), a baroque comedy exploring the capriciousness of love.
The production will take place Friday and Saturday, April 11 and 12, in Battell Chapel, corner of College and Elm streets. Tickets are $10; $5 for students.
"Il Trionfo dell'onore," which premiered in Naples, Italy, in 1718, is considered Scarlatti's only true comedy. The plot is typical of romantic comic operas of his time, with its series of misunderstandings and complications. In keeping with the intentions of Scarlatti, however, Yale singers will portray Scarlatti's characters not as heroic figures but as everyday contemporaries.
Doris Yarick-Cross, chair of the voice and opera department, will direct the production. She has appeared with most of the major opera companies in the United States, as well as with companies in Europe, Australia and Canada. She spent 16 years in Germany, where she sang leading roles in major opera houses. A well-known recitalist, she has also sung with the symphony orchestras of Pittsburgh, Quebec, Toronto and San Francisco, and with the New York Philharmonic. Yarick-Cross has been a member of the Yale faculty since 1983 and previously taught at the University of Texas and the University of Connecticut.
The stage director for the opera is Ned Canty, who has directed at such venues as Wolf Trap, Glimmerglass and New York City Opera. His productions have been hailed by Opera L for their "subtle and effective staging."
