Reviving aspirations for Israeli-Palestinian peace

Paths to future peace between Israelis and Palestinians will be explored in a conference on Monday, April 7, that will feature top negotiators at the Camp David Summit.

The conference, sponsored by the Yale Middle East Law Forum, will take place 10:10 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Law School, 127 Wall St.

Participants in the conference, titled "Reviving Aspirations of Peace: Strategies for an Israeli-Palestinian Accord," include Saab Erekat, the senior Palestinian peace negotiator at the Camp David Summit in July 2000 and the minister of local government of the Palestinian Authority, and Shlomo Ben-Ami, former minister of foreign affairs and the chief Israeli negotiator at Camp David.

Israel and the Palestinian Authority came closer than ever to reaching a peace agreement between the Camp David Summit and the ensuing negotiations leading to the Clinton Ideas of Dec. 23, 2000, and the Taba Round of negotiations the following January. Violence later erupted in the region, derailing the peace process.

The Yale conference will address negotiation strategies and attempts that have tried, especially at Camp David, and investigate potential strategies towards a future peace agreement in the region, says law student Trevor Lain, one of the event organizers.

"We see this conference primarily as an educational opportunity for Yale students, faculty and community members," Lain says. "The idea is to engage participants -- both guests and attendees -- in the discussion of what we can learn from past successes and failures, and how to apply these lessons for the future." Conference participants, Lain adds, have endorsed the idea of meeting in the neutral setting of the Law School.

Professional-level Camp David negotiators Gidi Grinstein, secretary and coordinator of the Israeli negotiation team for the Permanent Status Negotiations in the Office of the Prime Minister, and Ghaith Al-Omari, a legal adviser in the Palestinian Negotiations Support Unit, will also participate. Michal Ravid, a political scientist and scholar of the Camp David negotiations, and Ernesto Zedillo, director of the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization, will serve as moderators.

The conference will be held in two sessions. The first, "Negotiating for Peace: From Oslo to Taba, Lessons to be Learned," will feature Al-Omari and Grinstein in a discussion of the strategies that have been tried in the peace process thus far and the negotiation techniques employed by both parties. Their presentations will provide "detailed and non-politicized perspectives on what actually transpired in the months leading up to and following Camp David," according to Lain. Ravid will moderate this session, which begins at 10:10 a.m. in Rm. 122 of the Law School.

In the second session, "Aiming Towards Peace: Charting a Vision for the Future," Erekat and Ben-Ami will analyze the peace process and discuss the lesson that can be learned from past successes and failures. They will also talk about future strategies and analyze their merits and chances for political success. An American diplomat will provide a third-party perspective. Zedillo will moderate this session, which will begin at 2:10 p.m. in Levinson Auditorium with an introduction by Law School Dean Anthony Kronman and brief remarks by Zedillo.

A reception will follow in the conference room in the Law School's Alumni Reading Room.
