Mathematics prizes

The Department of Mathematics will award the Barge and Runk prizes on the basis of a competitive exam that is open to sophomores and freshmen.

The exam will be given 9 a.m.-noon on Monday, April 28, in Rm. 201, Leet Oliver Memorial Hall, 12 Hillhouse Ave. Students interested in taking the exam should sign up with Bernadette Alston-Facey in Rm. 434, Dunham Laboratory, 10 Hillhouse Ave.

In addition, undergraduates majoring in mathematics who wish to pursue their studies during the summer are eligible to compete for the John Alan Lewis Prize. A letter describing plans for summer study should be submitted to Professor Andrew Casson, director of undergraduate studies in mathematics, before Monday, April 28.

For more information about these prizes, call (203) 432-7792.

Free Reiki treatments

Pamela Potter, a doctoral candidate at the School of Nursing, is offering free Reiki treatments to participants in a study she is currently conducting.

The study involves the distress women experience when they have a breast biopsy. The current realm of care for patients undergoing a breast biopsy does not include any practices to reduce stress. Potter hopes to demonstrate that by including a Reiki treatment both before and following the procedure, the period and amount of stress in the patient will be greatly reduced. Reiki is a method of healing originated in Japan that uses a hands-on healing pattern to complement conventional care.

The study is open to women over the age of 18 who have been scheduled for a stereotactic, excisional or needle localization breast biopsy. The women will be randomly assigned to either a Reiki or usual care group. Those in the Reiki group will receive two treatments, one within the week before the biopsy and one within the week following. The usual care group will be offered a free Reiki treatment after the study in appreciation of their participation.

Women who are interested in participating in the study should contact Pamela Potter at (203) 507-0001 or pamela.potter@yale.edu.

Basketball events

The Department of Athletics will host two basketball events for children in April.

On Friday, April 18, 6-9 p.m., a "Kids Night Out" will be held at the Payne Whitney Gymnasium. The event will feature games, movies, basketball, volleyball and other activities for children ages 7-13. The cost per child is $20. There will be a discount for more than one child.

A basketball developmental clinic will be held 9 a.m.-noon, April 21-23. Basketball instruction will be provided by Yale women's basketball coaches and varsity players. The cost is $75 per person. There will be a discount for more than one child.

For more information, contact Yvonne Hawkins at (203) 432-2768.

Call for anthropology papers

The Yale Journal of Student Anthropology is seeking essays written by undergraduate and graduate students regarding any anthropological, archaeological or sociocultural topic.
