Yale hosts fifth Powwow
The fifth annual Yale Powwow, a celebration of Native American education and culture, will take place Saturday-Sunday, April 19-20, at the Payne Whitney Gymnasium, 70 Tower Pkwy.
On Saturday, the powwow will run from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and on Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The event is hosted by the Association of Native Americans at Yale and Indigenous, Inc. Admission is free.
"The Powwow is truly a unique event," says Nicole Willis, an organizer of the event. "With its festival atmosphere, it is entertaining for all peoples and ages. We hope the whole community can come out and enjoy the music and dancing and share in all the colors of Native American culture."
The event, co-sponsored by the Mohegan Tribe and the Mohegan Sun Casino, features $16,000 in prizes for winners of an invited drum contest and $13,000 in prizes for winners of an all-style dance contest. Native American vendors will offer for sale their arts, crafts, jewelry and clothing. Food will also be available.
