CENTURY to provide funding for pilot projects
The Center for Nicotine and Tobacco Use Research at Yale (CENTURY) is offering funding for pilot projects involving transdisciplinary research on tobacco use and dependence.
Transdisciplinary research incorporates methodological approaches and/or theories from different disciplines to understand a central problem.
Four pilot projects at the $25,000 level will be funded. A total of $100,000 will be awarded on an annual basis.
CENTURY is particularly interested in pilot projects that focus on understanding tobacco use and dependence in women and alcohol drinkers, as well as the interaction between depression and tobacco use. Ultimately, this research should have implications for the development of more effective strategies for prevention or treatment. The center especially encourages submissions of projects that incorporate innovative research technologies; new pharmacological and behavioral treatments, including safety and feasibility studies; preclinical and clinical biobehavioral research; and/or molecular neuroscience research, as well as studies that benefit from economies of scale and attract new investigators with expertise not currently available in the CENTURY/ Transdisciplinary Tobacco Use Research Center.
Letters of intent -- which are due by Thursday, May 1 --should have a descriptive title (not to exceed 60 characters) for the proposed project and the name and title of the principal investigator and other key personnel. They should also include a summary of the project including the project's specific aims (250 words); how the findings of the proposed project will support the goals of CENTURY; the time frame needed; and the transdisciplinary nature of the proposed project.
Applicants should submit the original letter and one copy and include their address, telephone and fax numbers, e-mail address and funding level category. The letter must be accompanied by the National Institutes of Health-style "Other Support" and two-page "biosketch." Limit the letter to a maximum of three pages, typewritten, double-spaced, 12-point font and one-inch margins. Facsimiles will not be accepted. Letters should be mailed or delivered to Amy Blakeslee, S-203, Connecticut Mental Health Center, 34 Park St., New Haven, CT 06519; telephone: (203) 974 7591; e-mail: amy.blakeslee@yale.edu.
The letters will be reviewed by members of the Scientific Review Committee and a full application will be requested from those investigators whose proposed projects are particularly promising. Full applications will be due by July 8 and will be sent out for peer review. The program does not provide critiques for unsuccessful proposals.
Full-time Yale faculty or full-time faculty-level members of Yale-affiliated hospitals and Yale post-doctoral fellows are eligible to apply. Investigators outside of the Yale community are invited to collaborate with Yale or Yale-affiliated principal investigators.
