Participants needed for CENTURY
smoking cessation study

A drug that can ease the process of quiting smoking by reducing the craving for cigarettes will be available to participants in a Yale study.

The study is designed to determine what kind of information works best when it comes to encouraging smokers to quit. For seven weeks, all participants in the study will receive information on quitting smoking and will take Zyban.

"The combination of Zyban and information presented in this study offers a promising opportunity for individuals who have previously failed to stop smoking," says the study's principal investigator, Peter Salovey, the Chris Argyris Professor and chair of psychology and dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. "We hope the results from this study will lead to better treatment approaches for people who have difficulty quitting smoking."

Zyban, a prescription drug, is one of the most widely used medications to help people quit smoking. In addition to reducing cravings for cigarettes, it can help reduce weight gain following quitting, and it can decrease other withdrawal symptoms. The drug will be available to study participants free of charge.

Zyban, or bupropion hydrochloride, was initially developed as an antidepressant by Glaxo Wellcome Inc. and was released under the trade name of Wellbutrin. The sustained release form was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1997 as a smoking cessation aid. Zyban is the only non-nicotine product tested and approved by the FDA for smoking cessation. In clinical trials, Zyban consistently doubled quit rates compared with a placebo, according to published studies.

Participants in the study will meet with researchers five times over the course of the seven weeks to discuss their attempt to quit. There also will be follow-up appointments at three- and six-month intervals.

For the study, researchers are seeking daily cigarette smokers who have tried to quit before. Participants should be between 18 and 70 years old. The study is being conducted at the Substance Abuse Treatment Unit on Long Wharf Drive in New Haven.

This study is one of several being conducted by the Center for Nicotine and Tobacco Use Research at Yale (CENTURY). The goal of the center is to help find out why some smokers have such a hard time quitting.

Other studies include research into whether the drug Naltrexone can help smokers quit, and another study provides participants with in-depth counseling during their attempt to quit.

The studies are funded in part by grants from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the National Cancer Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The grants were used to create the Transdisciplinary Tobacco Use Research Center at Yale, which is part of CENTURY.

More information about the studies is available on the CENTURY website at: http://info.med.yale.edu/century/.
