Alumni return for weekend celebrations
Yale College graduates will converge on campus to reminisce with their classmates, indulge in good food and music, and learn about life today at the University as part of reunion programs sponsored by the Association of Yale Alumni (AYA).
In recent years, the AYA has sponsored two separate but similar reunion programs over the course of two weekends. This year, members of the Classes of 1963, 1968, 1973, 1978, 1983 and 1988 will gather May 29-June 1, and the Classes of 1938, 1943, 1948, 1953, 1958, 1993 and 1998 will meet June 5-8.
In addition to activities aimed at specific classes, both reunion weekends will feature:
* "A Morning at Yale," in which alumni can choose from over two dozen activities ranging from a treasure hunt at the Peabody Museum of Natural History to an inside look at Yale's building renovations to dramatic readings to a Glee Club singing workshop, and more.
* "President's University Update" by Richard C. Levin, who will discuss new initiatives on campus and offer his outlook for the future.
* "AYA Faculty Lectures," presented by some of Yale's top teachers. The May 30-June 1 topics and speakers will be: "When You Come to a Fork in the Road, Take It: Yogi Berra's Guide to the Quantum World" by Ramamurti Shankar, professor and chair of physics and professor of applied physics; "Mosques, Churches, Synagogues: Images of the Shared Cultures of Medieval Spain" by Maria Rosa Menocal, the R. Seldon Rose Professor of Spanish & Portuguese; "China Today and the Echoes from the Past" by Jonathan Spence, Sterling Professor of History; and "The Nazis and Dixie: African Americans Anti-Fascism and Civil Rights in the 1930s" by Glenda Gilmore, the Peter V. and C. Vann Woodward Professor of History and professor of American studies and African American studies.
Shankar will also present his talk during the June 5-8 program; other topics and speakers that weekend will be "National Security and International Order" by Paul Bracken, professor at the School of Management; "Eleanor Roosevelt and the Making of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights" by Cynthia Russett, the Larned Professor of History; and "Why Do Women Smile More Than Men?" by Marianne LaFrance, professor of women & gender studies and psychology.
* "University Welcome Reception," which will offer all alumni a chance to mingle while enjoying "Wines of Yale," vintages that are produced or distributed by Yale alumni and friends of the University.
* " A Celebration of Yale Singing," featuring alumni from the Glee Club, the Whiffenpoofs and Whim 'n Rhythm performing Yale favorites in Woolsey Hall.
One notable Yale alumnus, George W. Bush '68, is not able to attend his class' 35th reunion. He is, however, hosting a reception for members of the Class of 1968 at the White House on the eve of their reunion.
