Biblical stories take on color and shape in "Molas: From Eden to Eternity," a traveling exhibit now on display at the Institute of Sacred Music (ISM).
Molas are panels of reversed appliqué that are worn on the front and back of the blouses of the women of the Cuna Indians of the San Blas Islands, off the eastern shore of Panama.
The mola panel consists of several layers of different colored cloth -- usually red, orange and black -- which are stitched together. Artists create designs by cutting out portions of the top layers to expose the colors of the lower layers, a technique usually called reverse appliqué. In addition, mola artists usually treat the top layer with direct appliqué, often in several layers and in a variety of stitches.
The pieces in the ISM display offer folkloric interpretations of familiar stories from the Bible.
There will be a reception for "Molas: From Eden to Eternity" 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 26. The event will feature live music by Wenther de Panama y su Orquesta. The public is invited.
The mola exhibit comes to ISM under the auspices of CIVA (Christians in the Visual Arts), with additional support from the Divinity School.
The Institute of Sacred Music is located at 409 Prospect St. It is open for exhibition viewing 9 a.m.-4 p.m. For more information, call (203) 432-5180.
