Call for art

The eighth in a series of art exhibits is being planned for the Yale Physicians Building Art Place. The exhibit will open Nov. 6.

Artists from the University, medical center, hospital communities and outside community are invited to submit their work for consideration. Artists must complete an application and submit a portfolio of work with a minimum of 12-15 prints, slides or the actual works, between Sept. 22 and Sept. 25.

For application forms and requirements, contact Linda Borer at (203) 785-5144 or send e-mail to linda.borer@yale.edu.

Peabody activities

Upcoming events at the Peabody Museum of Natural History include highlights tours in Spanish and a weekend program about dogs.

Docent-led tours in Spanish are now offered at 11 a.m. on the first and third Saturday of every month. The tours will feature all of the museum's major exhibits, including the Great Hall of Dinosaurs, the Mammal Hall, the Hall of Native American Cultures and Life in Ancient Egypt. All tours are free with museum admission (adults: $5; children ages 3-15 and seniors age 65 and over, $3; free to members or to those with a valid Yale I.D.)

"The Dog Days of Summer" will take place on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 23 and 24, from noon until 4 p.m. Events will include the opportunity to meet dogs that help humans, a make-your-own dog biscuit station and "How to Draw a Dog" with local television art personality Fred Carrion. Museum staff will display skulls, skeletons and pelts from the museum's wild dog collections. Visitors may enter their own dogs in various fun competitions. Demonstrations of sheepherding and frisbee dogs will be held outside the museum.

Schedules, contest rules and categories are available at www.peabody.yale.edu/events/dogdays.

OISS activities

The Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) will sponsor a picnic at Lighthouse Point Park and a potluck dinner in Edgerton Park in conjunction with a performance of Shakespeare's "The Tempest" in August.

The picnic will take place on Friday, Aug. 1. Participants will have the opportunity to share a potluck picnic, learn how to play "Ultimate Frisbee" or relax in their own fashion. They should also bring $2 for public transportation. Interested individuals should meet at OISS, 246 Church St., at 10:30 a.m. For more information or to sign up, send e-mail to margaret.valentino@yale.edu.

The potluck dinner will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 27 in Edgerton Park prior to the free performance of "The Tempest" by the Elm Shakespeare Company. Interested individuals should meet at Ingall's Rink parking lot at 6 p.m. or at the park at 6:30 p.m. To confirm a place, send e-mail to warrena.wilkinson@yale.edu.

Both events are free and open to members of the University community.

Tax notice

The Tax Office has issued a notice for international affiliates of the University.

All new international students, scholars, faculty members and other visitors who will receive any payments through the University payroll system -- for example, stipends, fellowships or wages -- should meet with the Tax Office prior to receiving payment.

At this meeting, a member of the office will review the individual's tax status to determine proper tax withholding, including whether the individual is eligible to claim a reduced income tax withholding rate pursuant to a tax treaty. The office will also determine if payments to the individual are exempt from Social Security and Medicare (FICA) tax withholding. For more information regarding payments to international individuals, visit the website at www.yale.edu/tax/int.

If an individual has not been set up on the payroll system prior to meeting with the Tax Office, he or she will need to provide documentation from the department regarding the position held (for example, postdoctoral fellow or postdoctoral associate) and type of payment (for example, stipend, fellowship or wage) at the appointment.

International students and scholars may schedule appointments through the International Tax Office website www.yale.edu/tax/int by clicking "appointments" in the list of options. In addition, department administrators may schedule an appointment on behalf of an international student or scholar using this website. To schedule an appointment with the office directly, call (203) 432-5530 or (203) 432-5597, or send e-mail to jodie.stewart-moore@yale.edu or daysi.cardona@yale.edu.

During the months of July, August and September, appointments will be scheduled Monday-Thursday between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Safety training sessions

The Office of Environmental Health & Safety will offer a series of training sessions in August for employees who work with dangerous substances.

Sessions will include "Bloodborne Pathogens Initial Training," "Chemical Safety Laboratory Personnel Training" and "Radiation Safety Orientation." Some courses are mandatory.

All sessions are free and will take place in the basement of 135 College St. For a complete listing and schedule of courses, visit the website at www.yale.edu/oehs/trainreq.htm or call (203) 785-3550.
