The answer is: 'Jeopardy!'

The question is: 'What show will tape
its college tournament at Yale?'

The Payne Whitney Gymnasium, home of innumerable contests of athletic prowess, will be the site of an intellectual face-off when the television show "Jeopardy!" holds its annual College Championship at Yale this fall.

Fifteen collegians from around the country will compete in the "Jeopardy!" tournament, which will be taped Oct. 3 and 4 in the gym's Lanman Center.

"It's always exciting watching today's young people play 'Jeopardy!,'" says the show's host, Alex Trebek. "Not only do the college students aim for individual honors, but they really compete for their schools as well. The Jeopardy! College Championship is always rich in spirit and school pride."

Yale will be the first Ivy League school to host the College Championship. "It's a winning combination," says Harry Friedman, executive producer of "Jeopardy!" "We know the students at Yale and the City of New Haven will make this a truly memorable event."

Although taped in just two days, the tournament will be televised nationally over two weeks, Nov. 10-21 (locally, at 7 p.m. on WTNH). In the first week, each of the 15 contestants will appear in one of five shows. The winners of each of these shows, along with the next four highest money earners will go on to the semi-finals. In the second week, the nine semi-finalists will compete in three shows for a place in the two-game final match.

The winner of this year's College Championship is guaranteed a minimum $50,000 cash prize, a specially designed trophy and a new car. The second place contestant is guaranteed a minimum of $15,000, and the third place winner gets a minimum of $10,000. Semi-finalists receive $5,000, and players eliminated in the first week receive $2,500.

The Jeopardy! College Championship search for the contestants will be held this summer across the country. More information regarding the auditions is available at www.jeopardy.com. On Tuesday, Sept. 23, the Jeopardy! Clue Crew will visit the Yale campus to audition prospective candidates for the national tournament and to present students with tickets to the event.

Tickets for the general public will also be made available for the tapings. Beginning in August, "Jeopardy!" fans may pick up ticket applications at soon-to-be-announced locations throughout Connecticut as well as a variety of on-campus Yale locations and departments. For more information and details visit www.wtnh.com or call the "Jeopardy!" hotline at (203) 784-8873.

Further information about the tournament will appear in future issues of the Yale Bulletin & Calendar.

Merv Griffin is the creator of "Jeopardy!" Friedman is executive producer of both "Jeopardy!" and "Wheel of Fortune." "Jeopardy!" is produced by Sony Pictures Television, a Sony Pictures Entertainment Company, and is distributed domestically by King World Productions, Inc. The U.S. episodes are distributed internationally by CBS Broadcast International (CBI). King World International Productions, a subsidiary of CBI, sells and produces format versions worldwide.
