Three journalists will enhance their
legal reporting as Knight Fellows

Writers from three leading publications will learn about the legal world as recipients of the Law School's Knight Fellowships for Journalists for 2003-2004.

The Knight Fellowships brings mid-career journalists to the Law School for an academic year to take courses and participate in seminars and other activities in order to enhance their legal reporting. During the course of the year, fellows receive basic foundations of a first-year legal education, and have the opportunity to take elective courses that focus on their areas of interest. Fellows study alongside students in Yale's J.D. and LL.M. programs, meet frequently with members of the Law School faculty for informal discussions, organize panel discussions and events for the Law School, and meet as a group with legal experts and other distinguished visitors. Upon completion of the course of study, the fellows are awarded the degree of Master of Studies in Law (M.S.L.).

This year's fellows are Chisun Lee, Village Voice; Daniel Fisher, Forbes Magazine; and Philip Segal, The Asian Wall Street Journal.

Lee has been a staff writer with the Village Voice since 2000, writing features and city stories in a wide range of areas including civil liberties, government, politics, immigration, race and social welfare. Her previous experience includes working as a freelance journalist for such publications as Vibe, A. Magazine and online outlets; as a research assistant for Rudolph Giuliani's biography, "Rudy!" where she traced the political history of Times Square development for the introductory chapter; and as a press secretary with the New York City Public Advocate.

Fisher has been the Southwest bureau chief for Forbes Magazine since 2000. His responsibilities there include managing the Houston bureau as well as covering energy, technology, legal affairs and other business news in the Southwest. His previous journalism assignments include two years at Forbes as the associate editor; five years with Bloomberg News as a business reporter; three years as business reporter and copy editor at the Dallas Times Herald; and four years as business reporter and copy editor at Kenosha News.

Segal has been the Hong Kong-based markets and finance editor of The Asian Wall Street Journal since 2000. His responsibilities there include managing a team of six reporters; editing the daily "Heard in Asia" column; writing a "Heard ..." or "Weekend Investor" column once a week; and filling in with spot news or feature writing. He was also part of TheStreet.com, working as the Hong Kong bureau chief and senior Asia correspondent. His other experience includes serving as president of the Foreign Correspondent's Club and working for Bloomberg Business News; Asia; Agence France-Presse; CBC National Television in Ottawa; NBC News; and Global Television News in Toronto.
