College master showcases his private art collection
"My Stuff" features paintings, drawings and prints that Haller and his wife, Sondra, have collected over the years, including works by Paul Cadmus and a number of Yale affiliates: School of Art Dean Richard Benson and School of Art alumnus Everest Hall; George Platt Lynes, a photographer who had attended Yale but did not graduate; Constance La Palombara, wife of Joseph La Palombara, the Arnold Wolfers Professor Emeritus of Political Science; and Yale College alumnus (and former Jonathan Edwards College resident) Natalie Frank '02. Haller, the Becton Professor of Engineering and Applied Science, describes in a booklet for the exhibition how he first became interested in collecting art when he discovered Cadmus' work in 1991. He later became friends with the artist and, through him, met other artists or was introduced to their art. Among these are Jared and Margret French, George Tooker, Bernard Perlin, Henry Koerner, Charles Rain, Pavel Tchelitchew and George Platt Lynes. These artists have been represented in a number of exhibits Haller has presented over the past five years in the master's house. "My Stuff" is dedicated to Richard Benson, whom Haller credits with broadening his interest in photography and with helping produce three JE photography exhibitions. Financial support for the exhibit comes from the Bates Fund and the Jonathan Edwards Trust. The exhibit, on view through Nov. 24, is open most Thursdays or by appointment by calling (203) 432-0356.
