The talk, sponsored by the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization, is free and open to the public. For more information, send e-mail to globalization@yale.edu or call (203) 432-1900. Annan was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2001 on the 100th anniversary of the award. He is the seventh secretary-general of the United Nations and the first secretary-general to be elected from the ranks of the United Nations staff. As secretary-general, Annan has tried to revitalize the United Nations through a program of reform; strengthen the organization's traditional work for peace and development; encourage and advocate human rights; and restore public confidence in the organization. Among his accomplishments at the United Nations are his role leading the first United Nations team negotiating with Iraq on the sale of oil to fund purchases of humanitarian aid; serving as Under-Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations; and serving as Special Representative of the Secretary-General to the former Yugoslavia, overseeing the transition in Bosnia and Herzegovina from the United Nations Protection Force to the multinational Implementation Force led by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Annan joined the United Nations system in 1962. Before being appointed Secretary-General, Annan served as Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations from 1993-1994, and then as Under Secretary-General (Feb. 1994-Oct. 1995; April 1996-Dec. 1996).
