Lectures, performances highlight museum-wide celebration at Yale Art Gallery
The Yale University Art Gallery will host an evening celebration of its newest exhibitions on Thursday, Oct. 17, which will feature a lecture, music, a reception and the opportunity to tour the museum.
The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a lecture on "Mechanical Vision: Photography and Mass Media in Ben Shahn's Sacco and Vanzetti Series" by Laura Katzman, a recognized authority on Shahn's work. Her talk coincides with the opening of the new exhibition "Justice on Trial: Ben Shahn's Case for Sacco and Vanzetti," which celebrates the 75th anniversary of the notorious murder case (see related story).
The lecture will be followed by a reception in the gallery's sculpture hall, music in the galleries and an opportunity to tour "Justice on Trial" and the other new exhibitions: "Wood Turning in North America Since 1930" and "Yale Collects Wood: Gifts from the Collection of John and Robyn Horn." The event is free and open to the public.
Katzman is associate professor of art and director of the museum studies program at Randolph-Macon Woman's College. She is currently a senior Fulbright Scholar and visiting professor of American studies at the University of Hamburg, Germany. She holds a Ph.D. in the history of art from Yale. A specialist in the art and politics of the New Deal era, Katzman was co-author of the award-winning book "Ben Shahn's New York: The Photography of Modern Times," published by Yale University Press in 2000. She was co-curator of the exhibition of the same title and has also organized two recent exhibitions: "A Life in Photography: Louis Rosskam and the Documentary Tradition" and "For All These Rights: Works by Ben Shahn, 1936-1970."
After Katzman's lecture, the folk music group Crows Feet will perform songs specifically written for the Sacco-Vanzetti anniversary. The Phil Rosenthal Bluegrass Trio will play adjacent to the exhibitions "Wood Turning in North America Since 1930" and "Yale Collects Wood: Gifts from the Collection of John and Robyn Horn." Classical guitarist James Bard will perform on the third floor close to the exhibition "Nine African-American Quilters," an exhibition mounted in the spring.
