Conference will explore new research
on health issues of women

Women's Health Research at Yale will host a conference on Tuesday, Oct. 15, to address the importance of women's health and to share new research results on the health of women.

The half-day professional conference begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Stamford Marriott, located at 2 Stamford Forum.

School of Medicine Dean Dr. David A. Kessler will give the welcoming address. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Carolyn M. Mazure, professor of psychiatry, associate dean for faculty affairs and director of the Women's Health Research Program at Yale. Dr. Barbara A. Ward, surgical oncologist of Surgical Specialists of Greenwich, P.C., and director of The Breast Center of Greenwich Hospital, will discuss the importance of research to clinical practice.

The conference will also feature individual sessions directed by Yale investigators who are conducting studies of benefit to women. Topics will range from women and heart disease to sex hormones and cognition, diet and osteoporosis, attitudes affecting treatment of pre-menstrual syndrome, gender and depression, and early detection of breast cancer.

As a group, women have historically been excluded as subjects in research studies. "The exciting news is that science is stepping forward, challenging prior assumptions and finding that women and men do have different risk factors for a variety of diseases," says Mazure. "Science is also finding that response to a given treatment can differ for women and men and conditions unique to or more prevalent in women, such as ovarian cancer and menopause or breast cancer and depression, need even more of our attention. Prevention initiatives may need to be sex-specific in order to keep us healthy."

Women's Health Research at Yale is an interdisciplinary program committed to generating new and useful scientific knowledge about women's health, determining sex-specific differences in health and disease, and providing information derived through research to the scientific community and general public.
