The School of Music and the Neighborhood Music School (NMS) will present "Chamber Conversations," a listening and lecture series on Thursdays, beginning Oct. 10. Participants will listen to recordings and learn about the salient features central to the enjoyment of upcoming concert programs offered by the Chamber Music Society at Yale. Sessions will include discussion of the musical style representative of the genre and tradition, the qualities unique to specific pieces, as well as broader aesthetic and cultural issues that underlie the music. The series will take place at NMS, 100 Audubon St. The tuition for the fall series of three sessions is $60 and $80 for the spring series of four sessions. There is an annual registration fee of $15, which will be waived for those already enrolled at NMS. Enrollment for the series is limited. The Horowitz Piano Series at Yale will mark its 2002-2003 season with concerts featuring three School of Music faculty members and the renowned pianist Misha Dichter. Now in its third year, the series will open with a concert by Peter Frankl on Monday, Oct. 14, at 8 p.m. in Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, corner of Orange and Wall streets. Frankl will perform works by Beethoven and Schumann. The upcoming concerts will feature Boris Berman on Nov. 18, Claude Frank on Jan. 27 and Dichter on March 26. All of the concerts take place at 8 p.m. in Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. Frankl, a member of the Yale faculty since 1987, has performed with some of the world's leading orchestras. His recordings include the complete works for piano by Schumann and Debussy, a solo Bartok and Chopin album and a Hungarian anthology. In recognition of his artistic achievements, Frankl was awarded the Order of Merit by the Hungarian Republic. The Horowitz Piano Series is presented by the School of Music. Charles Bailyn, chair of the Department of Astronomy, will discuss Timothy Ferris's book "Seeing in the Dark: Probing Deep Space and Guarding Earth" at a "Books Sandwiched In" discussion on Thursday, Oct. 17. The talk will take place 12:10-12:50 p.m. at United Church on the Green, corner of Temple and Elm streets. The public is welcome to attend the free event. "Books Sandwiched In" is a series of noon-time discussions of recently published books sponsored by the Friends of the New Haven Free Public Library.
The Connecticut Academy of Arts and Sciences, an organization affiliated with Yale University, will present a lecture by Kathleen Kete, associate professor of history at Trinity College, Hartford, on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 8 p.m. Titled "Animals and Ideology: The Politics of Animal Protection in Modern Europe," the lecture will be delivered in Hamlin Hall at Trinity College.
