Language study

The Center for Language Study is accepting applications for Directed Independent Language Study (DILS) for classes to begin in the Spring.

DILS responds to requests by individuals or small groups to learn a language for a valid academic reason, providing alternative ways for students to learn less commonly taught languages or other special purpose languages. Only those applications will be approved for which adequate materials, language partners and testing can be arranged.

The deadline for applications is Nov. 18. For additional information about DILS and for online application forms, visit the website at www.cls.yale.edu/dils; contact the director at dils@yale.edu; or call (203) 432-2502.

YUWO scholarships

The Yale University Women's Organization (YUWO) is offering scholarship awards to women whose formal education has been interrupted or delayed and who wish to resume their studies, or enhance or change their careers.

Members of the Yale community and their family members are eligible for the awards. YUWO members and family are not eligible. Present staff members and wives of staff members will be given first consideration. Applicants are judged upon merit
and need.

Applications for the 2003-2004 academic year may be obtained by writing to Connie Marsden, 32 Hunting Ridge Farms, Branford, CT 06405-6131. Applicants should state their Yale affiliation and enclose a self-addressed, stamped, business-sized envelope. The deadline to apply is March 1, 2003. For more information, call Mrs. Marsden at (203) 481-1795.

Yale-China teaching fellowship

The Yale-China Association will award seven teaching fellowships this year to recent Yale graduates and members of the Class of 2003.

Yale-China provides fellows with Mandarin Chinese instruction, teaching and cultural training, and ongoing support during the two years of their fellowships. The fellowship also includes a yearly stipend, travel expenses to and from mainland China or Hong Kong, and a local salary from their host schools. Prior teaching experience or academic background in the Chinese language is not required.

For more information, visit the association at 442 Temple St. or view the website at www.yalechina.org. Notice of intention to apply for the fellowships is due Friday, Nov. 15; applications are due on Friday, Nov. 22.
