United Way donors can now target gifts to Dwight Hall
Dwight Hall at Yale, which serves as the center for student community service work and social justice initiatives, has earned donor designation by the United Way of Greater New Haven.
As such, donors to the 2003-2004 United Way Campaign can specify that their contribution be earmarked for Dwight Hall. Yale is a major participant in the yearly fundraising campaign. (See related story).
In order to qualify for the United Way donor designation, Dwight Hall had to certify its compliance with certain state and federal regulations by completing a questionnaire and providing the required documentation to the United Way of Greater New Haven.
United Way member agencies must meet the following criteria: be recognized as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code; provide a direct health or human service in one or more towns in the State of Connecticut; have been in existence for at least two years (Dwight Hall was founded at Yale in 1886); be overseen by an active, governing volunteer board of directors; undergo an annual independent audit and provide the United Way of Greater New Haven with copies of audited financial statements, management letters and a copy of its Internal Revenue Service filing on Form 990; have administrative and fundraising costs of 25% or less of its revenue, as calculated on Form 990; and agree to comply with the United Way terms and restrictions.
Dwight Hall's board of directors is made up of Yale alumni, students and faculty, as well as community leaders. Its costs are 7.13% of its revenue.
"We are pleased to have this approval, given that the applications for donor designation are screened carefully by the United Way," says Kathrine Burdick, general secretary of Dwight Hall. "Agencies not having the appropriate documentation are not accepted. All donors to the United Way should feel comfortable with the thought that the local United Way is making every effort to ensure the reliability of its member agencies."
More than 3,000 undergraduate students volunteer annually at some 60 community organizations and schools through programs affiliated with Dwight Hall. The Dwight Hall Student Cabinet - a group of undergraduate leaders of student-run programs - provides support and resources to student volunteers. Dwight Hall also offers a speaker series and several community service internship programs, including the Dwight Hall Summer Internship Program, which allows Yale students the opportunity to dedicate their summers to community service in New Haven (See related story).
