Yale College Dean Richard H. Brodhead

Service is a tradition for Yale College dean

Supporting the United Way and other community service initiatives has long been a tradition for Yale College Dean Richard H. Brodhead, who is serving this year as chair of the Yale Leadership Campaign (see related story).

In fact, it has been somewhat of a family tradition for the dean; his father once chaired the United Way campaign in Bridgeport.

The dean has served on the board of directors of Leila Day Nursery, a United Way partner agency. His affiliation with Leila Day Nursery dates back to when his now-grown son attended the day care center and nursery school. He and his wife particularly valued the mix of children made possible by a sliding scale of tuition.

Brodhead acknowledges that a significant portion of students' education during their time at Yale takes place beyond the classroom - as they work, for example, as public school tutors, in soup kitchens, or with community agencies addressing such issues as poverty and mental illness. More than 3,000 Yale students are engaged in community service work, many through United Way partner agencies.

The dean's reason for contributing to the United Way fundraising drive is a simple one.

"Of course we support programs we've had personal experience with," Brodhead says.

"But are there programs and initiatives in a city like New Haven - besides those we've been directly involved in - that also need support? The answer is 'yes,' and contributing to the United Way Campaign is an opportunity for each of us to lend that support."
