'Start with the Arts' will
highlight city's attractions

"Start with the Arts," a new program designed to raise awareness about the Elm City's rich offerings in the arts, is being launched this month by Market New Haven Inc., the City of New Haven Office of Cultural Affairs, the Town Green Special Services District and the Arts Council of Greater New Haven.

Through the "Start with the Arts" program, a cultural map of the city and a calendar of special events will be distributed to area residents and visitors. The map offers general information about New Haven's many performance venues, museums, galleries, ateliers and exhibition spaces, while the inaugural calendar offers specific information about activities taking place in the city Sept. 12-Oct. 12.

There will be a kick-off reception for "Start with the Arts" 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 12, at the Neighborhood Music School on Audubon Street, in conjunction with ArtSpot! New Haven, which is billed as a "happy hour with an arts twist." The event will feature food, drink, music and sample dance lessons. There is a $10 suggested donation.

Cultural maps and calendars will be available at any of the arts institutions in New Haven.

Among the Yale cultural attractions featured in "Start with the Arts" are:

• The Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, which now features an exhibition of Carl Van Vechten's photographs of notable 20th-century women;

• The Yale Institute of Sacred Music;

• The Peabody Museum of Natural History, where the exhibit "The Burgess Shale: Evolution's Big Bang" is on view through Nov. 23;

• The Yale Center for British Art, which will feature the exhibition "Traces of India: Photography, Architecture and the Politics of Repression" beginning Oct. 16;

• The Yale University Art Gallery, which will host a symposium on "Classical Furniture in America, 1800-1840" on Sept. 19; and

• The Yale Repertory Theatre, which will offer its visitors one complimentary ticket for every ticket they purchase for the preview of the Rep's first production this season, "The Black Dahlia," which runs Oct. 17-Nov. 8.

Among the other area activities and attractions featured in the "Start with the Arts" map and calendar are: family activities at the Connecticut Children's Museum; an exhibition of vintage photographs of old Elm City at the New Haven Colony Historical Society; the Small Space Art Gallery of the Arts Council of Greater New Haven; the sixth annual "City Wide Open Studios" (October 7-29); the Creative Arts Workshop; the John Slade Ely House; the Long Wharf Theatre; and the Shubert Theater.
